Tutoring experience:
During my time at university I was teaching English as a foreign language to overseas pupils. Over the past years I have tutored English and Maths GCSE to pupils and English A-level and have also worked as a mentor in English as a foreign language. Throughout the final year of my BA I tutored English to three refugee children aged 8-9. My lessons aimed to help the pupils obtain a level of English that would enable them to keep up with lessons and integrate. Prior to this I taught English as a foreign as a foreign language where during my year abroad I taught a family of three Italian children aged 5, 11 and 16. For each student I adapted my lessons to suit their levels of English for listening, reading, writing and conversation. I have repeatedly taught Maths and English online, preparing students for A-Levels, preparing one of my students for entry into Charterhouse school – we had weekly skype lessons looking at poetry and text analysis and constructing essays under timed conditions.
What makes your teaching style unique?
With subjects such as English and History I encourage the pupil to develop their own way of thinking and analysing an issue and help them channel their ideas inan exam setting. I enjoy working through their syllabuses, adapting my lessons to suit their levels of English for listening, reading, writing and conversation.
What do you do apart from tutoring?
I have been working as a journalist for The New York Times and The Guardian and have the luxury of flexible hours where I can work around my tutoring practice. I also enjoy reading and playing the saxophone. I also enjoy reading and playing the saxophone.
